Bergdahl – Then and Now

Okay; there’s a lot we know of deserter/possible traitor Bowe Bergdahl – some we still don’t know, and more that is coming to light – both of his situation and that of his oddball father Bob.

In 2010 a military investigation found that in 2009 Bowe did in fact walk off base and this evidently wasn’t the first time.

He did leave a note saying that he didn’t wish to fight for America anymore – that he didn’t support the Army mission.

Apparently some Afghans have come forward, saying that he was actually searching out the Taliban.

That leads to another salient point made by two actual American heroes. Col. Allen West said he wondered why Bergdahl’s throat wasn’t cut and then disemboweled, as is typical of the Taliban. Navy SEAL hero, Marcus Luttrell (Lone Survivor) wondered how he lasted that long without having his head cut off. Both good points made by actual heroes that were in the Afghan theater fighting the Taliban. Neither of them buy the POW routine.

And by the way – he was not a POW, not even by Geneva Convention standards!

At least one soldier claimed that after he disappeared, the IED attacks became a lot more precise, as if the Taliban were now able to better pinpoint troop positions.

Bowe was promoted, in absentia, in 2011 to Sergeant and is set to receive his full five-year back pay upon returning to the states.

The question is, should he receive it, or the promotion in 2011?

At least six brave servicemen were killed trying to locate him.

Okay – that’s the son. What about the dad, Bob Bergdahl? He’s an interesting story.

MailOnline reports that Bob was actually a world-class athlete who made the US Olympic cycling team. He unfortunately never got to compete in the 1980 games in Moscow because of the Jimmy Carter boycott of the games.

Bob didn’t take it well. He was heartbroken.

In case you need a reminder, the US boycott was over the 1979 Soviet invasion of… Afghanistan. There’s karma for you.

Understandably, Bob was quite bitter and developed, let’s just say, an extreme dislike of the government. He had trained for years and for what? He had dreams of becoming a professional athlete and his dream was shattered.

MailOnline reports that according to a close friend, “Bob became disillusioned and vowed never to ride again.”

To add insult to injury, his cycling mate was none other than cycling great Greg LeMond who went on to fame and fortune while Bob became a UPS driver.

He did start writing decades later, but who really knows how he feels about the government and the U.S. in general.

All his recent tweets suggest his loyalties don’t lie with us.

To me, the actions, the tweets, his 2011 video message to the Taliban and that his son was “a prisoner and at the same time a guest in your home”, create suspicion.

Bob may just be a 60s hippie who wants his son back as described by his best friend, but he sounds to me like much more.

As for his son – he is definitely a deserter, probably a traitor, and should be punished as one.
